CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Celia agreed to stay behind, but she made sure I knew this was the last time. They were both supremely worried about me going to L.A by myself. That being said, Andre wasn’t remotely threatening to me. I didn’t feel like I needed an escort on this mission. What chance did a siren stand against the Nephilim? Besides… if he had any decent abilities, I would like to think that he would have tried to prevent the collapse of the Veil.

I had only been to California once in my life before now. My mom and dad took me to Anaheim for the whole shebang. It was an awful trip. My mom was on her phone working the entire time (she is a defense attorney) and my dad was always too passive of a parent to be any fun. Plus I got an awful case of the flu the last day before we drove back home and I was puking in the car the whole way. It left a bitter perspective of California in my mind, but now that I was driving through it myself, it was actually really beautiful. Especially all of the green I had been missing in Nevada.

Besides, being in traffic meant I wasn’t sitting in front of a television watching the cleanup of my collateral damage. I couldn’t listen to the radio because nobody was playing music in light of that. I settled for Bluetooth with Nine Inch Nails on low. Celia lent me a shitty old MP3 player and that was more than enough for me.

It took me a half-hour to get to the spot. It was a giant building called, “Pro-Plex”. It was a weird company I hadn’t heard of before. I put my sunglasses on and threw my black hood over my ashen hair. I was almost startled into hurting the man that ripped my door open out of my hand.

“Valentine?” he uttered quietly. It was one of Andre’s bodyguards, that horrible man Alexei that opened fire on innocent people. I flicked my wrist in his direction and sent him flying nearly into traffic. That should’ve been an answer enough. I exited the
